Their energy, enthusiasm and charm make them hard to ignore. As pets grow older, life with an animal takes on a different perspective, but can be just as rewarding as caring for a young pet. To ensure that you and your pet enjoy the best of their `golden' years take special care. Seven years of age sounds young, but for most dogs and cats, that is the start of their senior years. For giant dog breeds (for example, Great Danes) it's even younger, beginning at five years of age. With the life span of animals varying significantly, but in general not exceeding 20 years, a pet owner could be responsible for an aging pet for the majority of the animal's life. Supporting the good health of your animal begins with diet, exercise and awareness. Helping to keep your pet healthy is an important part of safeguarding the time remaining in its life. Consider the health risks associated with a heavier pet. Weight adds strain on an aging body and on joints and vital organs. Pet foods produced for older animals will help your pet keep a healthy weight. High sodium foods stress a pet's heart and are not suitable, particularly for older animals. Exercise, appropriate for the animal's age and ability, will also help to maintain proper body weight. In addition to body weight, teeth can be an indicator of good health. Brushing teeth daily is not only ideal for humans, but helps to keep tartar away for pets. Some foods help reduce tartar build up, but the best method of cleaning is a trip to the veterinarian. Regular visits to the veterinarian at least once per year will help keep you on top of any change in health your pet may be experiencing. Talk to your vet about any noticeable changes in behaviour or any apparent discomfort your animal may be experiencing when moving. These could be indications that something is wrong with your pet. If your pet seems stiff or uncomfortable, talk to your veterinarian about possible pain medications. Medicine may be one way to provide your pet comfort, but there are also others. Sleep becomes a significant part of an older animal's day as their energy level slows. Comfort to an older pet comes in the form of an indoor draft-free place to sleep. Staying outside in the cold and damp is not well-suited to a senior animal's health. A cushioned sleeping area will help to provide relief to tired achy joints. Golden years for animals include time spent with owners. The regular play and walk routines established with younger pets should not be ignored with an older animal, but the level of activity will need to be modified according to the animal's health. A consistent daily routine is important to your older dog's physical, mental and emotional health, providing comfort and a reassuring framework. For most animals, spending time with their owner is an important part of ensuring older years are golden. 141108 ADVERTORIAL Health Benefits of Saunas "A sauna used to be thought of as a luxury. But studies now confirm that diet and environmental chemicals cause 95% of cancers. Furthermore, as the first generation of man exposed to such an unprecedented plethora of daily chemicals, we have learned that stored or un-detoxified chemicals can mimic any disease. `Incurable' chronic diseases that were thought to have no known cause often disappear once toxic chemicals are gone. Since the far infrared sauna is the safest, most efficacious and economical way of depurating stored toxins, this makes it a household necessity." Sherry A. Rogers, MD Northeast Centre for Environmental Medicine (Internationally-known expert in environmental medicine) Author of: Tired Or Toxic?, Total Wellness, Wellness Against All Odds, Depression Cured at Last, Pain Free, and No More Heartburn Total Tech Pool and Spa offers the most extensive line of sauna and steam bath products, including traditional sauna stoves, steam bath generators, do-it-yourself sauna kits, traditional modular sauna rooms, infrared radiant sauna rooms, infrared components, accessories, and much more.
