2- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 22, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com McGuinty Government Proposes New Rules For Novice Drivers News Release November 18th, 2008 indicated that the McGuinty government has introduced new legislation and regulations to improve the Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). GLS does work...14 years after the program began, fatalities and injuries among teen drivers have declined by almost 25%. "Teenaged drivers are about 3.5 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision," said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley "Lengthening their training period will give young and novice drivers more time to develop a lifetime of safe driving habits." One of the proposed improvements to this system include: Increasing the length of time drivers spend at the G1 and G2 levels. Currently novice drivers can obtain a full G licence in as little as 20 months. The new legislation proposes the minimum would be 30 months. Proposed Length in this Phase: p g Minimum 1 ½ years (18 months), reducible to 12 months if the driver completes an approved driver education course and presents the certificate to the Ministry. (To find an approved driver training program please go to the Ministry of Transportation website at www.mto.gov. on.ca and search by city) PLUM fresh innovative NOW BOOKING PRIVATE CHRISTMAS PARTIES G2 Requirements Current Length in this Phase: Minimum g 1 year (12 months) Proposed Length in this Phase: p g Minimum 1 ½ years (18 months) These newly proposed changes to the legislation have not come into effect yet.
