www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 23, 2009 - 9 Town Hall event kicks off Black History month On Wednesday, Feb. 4, the Town of Oakville will host the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) Black History Month Celebration in the Oakville Town Hall's South Atrium. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., the event will feature African drumming, a steel band and guest speakers. Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate's Oakville Black History exhibit will also be on display for the evening. Guest speaker at the event will be Michele Johnson who describes herself as a child of the Jamaican peasantry, a child of formerly enslaved people. Johnson hails from rural Jamaica where she says she had the good fortune to grow up with family members who had/have their feet firmly planted in the soil. After attending secondary school, Michele pursued her education at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica when she earned a bachelor of arts and a master of philosophy in history. She later attended the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland on a Fulbright scholarship; there she earned an master's in history and a Ph.D. in history. Johnson then returned to Jamaica where she taught history at the University of the West Indies. In 2002, Johnson joined the faculty in the History Department at York University. At York University, Johnson teaches a variety of courses focused on the African presence in the Americas ranging from Caribbean history and AfricanCanadian history through a wide range of courses titled In Slavery and Freedom: Blacks in the Americas. Guest entertainer at the event will be John Campbell, a singer, pianist, composer and actor with an impressive list of accomplishments. Campbell is very active in the local music scene. The CCAH Black History Education and community outreach activities are continuing with programs not only in February, but throughout the entire year.
