In her recently-published book, Bitter Roots, Tender Shoots: The Uncertain Fate of Afghanistan's Women, Armstrong revisits Afghanistan to compare the lives of women pre- and post-Taliban. While some improvements in education, health care and human rights have been achieved, women are still struggling with the brutal force of tribal law and the unyielding stance of fundamentalists. The event will be an opportunity to hear Armstrong's views as to why Canada and the international community need to be involved in Afghanistan and what the future holds for the women and girls of the struggling country. The event is being co-hosted with the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) -- Oakville. Canadians in Support of Afghan Women will be selling goods handmade by women in Afghanistan at the meeting. Armstrong's latest book is a follow-up to her bestseller, Veiled Threats: The Hidden Power of the Women of Afghanistan, published in 2002. As she states in her book, "To a world traumatized by 9/11, Afghanistan has become a story about terrorists, drug barons, and the Taliban insurgency. To me, it remains a chronicle about blameless women and girls who continue to pay an awful price for the opportunism of angry men. But I, too, am hopeful. The women activists, journalists and changemakers are slowly breaking down the taboo around talking about the status of women and girls in Afghanistan.
