12 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 18, 2009 www.oakvillebeaver.com Michelin Equips NASA's new Lunar Rover Vehicle Carguide Magazine Metroland Newspapers Michelin is supplying a specially designed wheel for NASA's next generation of moon rover vehicles. Featuring highly specialized materials, this engineering breakthrough will enable the lunar vehicles to maintain their mobility in extreme conditions over harsh terrain. Made of patented composite materials, the structurally supported tire/wheel assembly was jointly developed by Michelin's European and North American research centres. As a result of this exclusive development, Michelin will help meet NASA's mobility needs for manned and unmanned missions to the moon over the next decade. Based on the Michelin Tweel, the Michelin Lunar Wheel maintains flexibility and constant ground pressure, allowing the vehicle to move through loose soil and craters. In addition, it combines low weight and high load-carrying capacity, making it 3.3 times more efficient than the original Apollo Lunar Rover wheels. Its textile tread, developed in partnership with Clemson University and Milliken & Company, enables the rover to maintain traction at very low temperatures. The Michelin Lunar Wheel underwent testing in Hawaii from October 31 to November 13, 2008 as part of NASA's lunar analogue testing and evaluation program. The terrain, rock distribution and soil composition of Hawaii's Big Island provide a high-quality simulation of the lunar polar region. Chevrolet at the Geneva Motor Show 2009 Carguide Magazine Metroland Newspapers There's a Spark promising to light up this year's Geneva Motor Show, and it's to be found on the Chevrolet stand. The company's all-new mini car goes on sale in Europe later this year and is the latest interpretation of Chevrolet's new global design strategy. As well as Europe, the car will be sold in the USA, Canada, India and other core markets, where its compact dimensions and vibrant good looks will appeal to customers. Powered by a choice of fuel-efficient 1.0 and 1.2-litre engines, the five-door Spark has a distinctive, angular cabin that matches its bold exterior styling, a look that is designed to appeal to young and mature drivers alike. The head-turning design will be complemented by outstanding passenger space, entertaining driving characteristics and, of course, Chevrolet's tradition for providing extraordinary value for money. The Geneva show, which is open to the public from March 5-20, will also see the entire Chevrolet Cruze range appearing for the first time. The new four-door sedan was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October, and is set to go on sale in Europe in July 2009.
