The best 10-year-old Little League baseball teams in Ontario will visit Oakville Aug. 1-6 to compete for the 2009 Little League Ontario Minor Baseball Championship. Oakville Little League played host to the Canadian Senior Little League Championship last summer. "The Oakville Little League board felt that hosting this championship would allow the league to give back to the community and stimulate the local Oakville economy by bringing 150-plus visitors to Oakville for seven days," said Oakville Little League president John Sweeney. "Our experience hosting last year's Canadian Senior Little League Championship showed us that events of this nature have a significant impact on the local economy, especially for the hotels, restaurants and shopping venues." Teams competing will be representing the eight districts in Little League Ontario: Ottawa West, Ottawa East, Ottawa Valley, Lanark Seaway, Windsor-LaSalle, Timmins-North Bay, Thunder Bay and HamiltonToronto. The hometown minor all-stars, the Whitecaps, will also participate, and plan to host a banquet for all the teams. "This event is a big undertaking for our league and can only be successful with the generous support of volunteers," said Oakville Little League vice-president of baseball operations John Mooney. Anyone interested in sponsorship or volunteering to help organize and run the tournament is invited to visit www.ollb.org, call the Oakville Little League office at 905-827-1831 or e-mail administration@ollb.org.
