5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 25, 2009 Share your Earth Hour memories What will you be doing when the lights go out for Earth Hour, (8-9 p.m., Saturday, March 28)? Are you dining by candlelight -- either at home or at a participating restaurant -- attending a candlelight concert, playing a board game at home with the family, camping out in the living room with a flashlight or enjoying a party on the patio deck with family and friends? Earth Hour began two years ago in Sydney, Australia, where lights were turned off for one hour to recognize global warming. Last year, it became a global event with towns and cities around the world observing an hour of lights out to raise awareness of global climate change. Oakville set a five per cent energy conservation goal last year and achieved energy savings of 8.2 per cent. This year, the Town's goal is to reduce energy consumption by 10 per cent during the hour.
