The `Motor Vehicle Dealers Amendment Act (Disclosure of Lemons) was introduced by Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn to the legislature last week. The bill would require motor vehicle dealers to disclose in writing to potential buyers whether a vehicle has been determined to be a lemon under the laws of another jurisdiction. "We need to ensure that Ontario consumers are making informed decisions before they buy that vehicle," said Flynn. "This issue is particularly significant in today's difficult economic times when for most the purchase of a vehicle is the second largest purchase made by consumers after buying a home." Flynn said there is ample reason for such a bill as the non-profit group Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety estimate that manufacturers buy back more than 100,000 lemons a year and then resell most of them, often without disclosing their history. The group said some of these cars are finding their way into Canada. This assertion was backed up by a CBC News Investigation, which detected a steady increase in the number of lemons imported into Canada as the dollar approached parity.
