OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, April 25, 2009 · 32 Dolphins fifth at D-1 meet Oakville Dolphins Swim Club members combined to set 25 club records and win 17 gold medals, helping the Dolphins finish fifth at the Ontario Division 1 Team Championships last weekend at Etobicoke Olympium. The Dolphins' showing was a threeplace improvement on their finish at last year's team championships, which bring together the top 16 teams from across the province. Each team is permitted a maximum of 40 participants and swimmers are limited to five individual events each. Meryn McCann, 10, and Sinead Russell, 15, were the Dolphins' top pointgetters. McCann won four gold and a silver, while Russell won all five of her events. Also winning gold for the Dolphins were 24-year-old Colin Russell (two), 12year-old Olivia Sbaraglia and 16-year-old Oleksandr Loginov. Conor Russell, Christina Tanninen and Lauren Dixon each added silver medals. In relay, which is worth double the points of individual races, Dolphins teams swam to two silvers and two bronze. The women's 4x50-metre freestyle team of Larissa Ruiz, Stella Zhao, Tanninen and Russell finished second, as did the men's 4x50m freestyle team of Cameron Russell, Pavel Tselichtchev, Colin Russell and Loginov. Sinead Russell, Dixon, Ruiz and Tanninen earned bronze in the women's 4x50m medley, with Cameron Russell, Colin Russell, Tselichtchev and Loginov matching the feat in the boys' race. Also contributing points on the weekend for the Dolphins were George Papangelakis, Panos Papangelakis, William Dixon, Maggie Burns, Bronwyn Evans, Meaghan McCann, Marina Biasutto, Courtney Gregorian and Isabelle Nat. Etobicoke Pentathlon Earlier in the month, the Dolphins opened the long-course season by winning two divisions and bettering seven club records at the Etobicoke Pentathlon. Sinead Russell and Nat earned pentathlete honours, which recognize the best overall swimmers that compete in the same five events in their respective age groups (100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley). Both won gold in four of their five races. Meryn McCann and Lauren Dixon also won gold medals at the competition. Dixon, 13, will take part in a training/competition segment May 20-25 at the University of British Columbia training centre.The camp is designed for identified youth 18 and under to help them develop the will, attitude and skills to race to the podium at the senior international level. The focus on this particular experience is the development of the athlete's potential for future national teams. Dixon and others will be instructed by world-renowned coach Jozef Nagy, coach of Canadian and former world record holder Anna May Pierce. Erin Russell, Dixon's personal coach and also coach of Olympian Colin Russell and national youth team member Sinead Russell, will attend in order to help Dixon integrate and learn from one of the world's top breaststroke coaches.
