OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 1, 2009 · 10 Town seeks input on 10-year economic development strategy Town council wants residents and the business community to weigh in on a draft 10-year economic development strategy council received from staff earlier this week. The strategy focuses on three goals, which include attracting knowledge-based industries in the professional services (advanced manufacturing and life sciences), responding to the needs of the business community to foster business retention and expansion; and exploring international business opportunities. "The Economic Development Strategy 2009-2019 recognizes the limited supply of employment lands in Oakville and recommends a targeted approach to achieve the highest and best use of these lands," said Dorothy St. George, director of economic development for the Town of Oakville. "We're going out to the community to get feedback on our proposed direction." Over the next six weeks, St. George said, the 10-year strategy will be shared with the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and other local business organizations as well as a number of stakeholders who contributed to the make up of the plan. A public meeting to discuss the strategy will be held on Thursday, May 14. The strategy and background papers can be found online at www.oakville.ca. Comments on this matter can be sent to dstgeorge@oakville.ca or mailed to the Town of Oakville, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., Oakville ON L6J5A6. The feedback from these groups will be collected until May 29 and used to develop a final 10-year economic strategy that will go to the council in July. Sprin g Rescreen Sale Spring has sprung! Halton Region is asking residents to ensure they are prepared for a major emergency such as a blackout or severe storm -- an event many residents might be familiar with after last weekend's major storm knocked out power to many households. As part of the 14th annual Emergency Preparedness Week from May 3-9, the Region is issuing a reminder to residents to plan for an emergency by knowing the risks, making a family plan and getting an emergency kit that contains food, water, a radio, a flashlight and batteries to get through at least a 72-hour emergency. Residents can visit www.halton.ca/beprepared to find out more information and download resources such as Halton's Personal Emergency Preparedness Guide and information for people with special needs or disabilities. The information can also be obtained at municipal offices or facilities or by calling 1-866-442-5866 or via email at accesshalton@halton.ca.
