According to Lewis, gender inequality is the root of a lot of evil perpetrated against women around the globe in what he calls a "war on women." The leading humanitarian was the guest speaker Wednesday night at King's Christian Collegiate at the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) Out for Africa fundraiser. Lewis outlined to the crowd of several hundred his involvement in what he called "a high-level panel" working to establish such a women's advocacy agency that would "be able to intervene in ways we've never seen up to now." The rights of women -- 52 per cent of the world's population -- are slow to be established. "It's slow. It's painful," said Lewis describing the female population as so vulnerable, yet very Stephen Lewis strong. Oakville firefighters past and present turned out in droves Thursday morning to mark the 100th anniversary of the Oakville Fire Department. The great milestone was celebrated in Town Hall's North Atrium with a special cake cutting ceremony and a presentation about what the fire department has done and where it is going. "From our very humble beginnings built out of community spirit and necessity the fire department has grown with the town to become one of the best and most innovative fire departments in Ontario," said Oakville Fire Chief Richard Boyes. "From the needs of a growing town on Lake Ontario, to the village of Bronte to protect its buildings and its fishing industry, to the town of Trafalgar to protect its residents, three fire departments have grown and evolved with the community to what we have today." Boyes said the founders of the Oakville Fire Department would be surprised to see how the hand pump on their old pumper trucks has evolved into the fire suppression systems the department uses today.
