Book chronicles 100-year history of fire department 3 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 1, 2009 Continued from page 1 appreciation for what the Oakville Fire Department has accomplished in its history. With 100 years to draw upon, organizers were able to mark the occasion by packing the North Atrium with plenty of interesting fire department memorabilia. The display included old news clippings about past fires, uniforms from the past, old medals, a pumper truck and even a great metal cone, which was apparently was used by former fire chiefs as a kind of megaphone for communicating messages to nearby firefighters. Ken Pollock, who was a firefighter from 1946 to 1986, said this method of communication predates his time, but points out there have still been plenty of changes to the firefighting industry since he was in uniform. "The biggest change is in the protective clothing," he said. "They have bunker suits now. They used to have old raincoats, rubber boots up to your hip and a rubber hat. It worked pretty good, nobody got burned, we just had to stay back a ways." Pollock said his father was an original member of the Bronte Fire Service, which was formed in 1925 after the local bucket brigade was unable to stop a hotel from burning to the ground. While much of the celebration was spent looking at the past, some of it was also spent looking at the future with particular attention paid to the coming release of the Oakville Fire Department's comprehensive history book entitled Reflections of a Proud History. The book, which will be released later this summer, is the culmination of five years worth of grueling work by Fire Prevention Officers Glenn Barwell and John Percy and the fire department's Administrative Assistant Lynn Norton. In an address during the celebration, Barwell noted the group meticulously researched the book, reading through old news stories and Town council minutes to get an accurate history of the Oakville Fire Department for the book. "Early on, the (book) committee reached out to the community and put out a call for historical information. Many of you delivered and we are grateful for the bounty of photos and submissions and artifacts that we have received," said Barwell. Photos from Oakville Fire Department photographer Scott Snowball have also been included in the book. Copies of the book can be ordered for $35 until May 30 and $45 after. For a limited time, Oakville Fire Department anniversary pins will be given out with each purchase of the book. To reserve a copy of the department's history book, call 905-845-7114.
