33 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 22, 2009 Prefect program a perfect fit at Holy Trinity secondary By Chloé Restivo, Michelle Salvatore and Diana Saturno PREFECTS, HOLY TRINITY SECONDARY SCHOOL T eenagers too often get a bad reputation; apparently we're lazy, dishonest, self-absorbed and don't care about the world. However, students at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School are trying to erase this image and display the true capabilities of Oakville's youth through the Prefect Organization. Founded in early 2008 by Ms. Welch and Mr. LoPresti, this initiative involves nearly 50 students ranging from Grades 9 to 12. The program exists to promote school spirit, student engagement, leadership and community involvement in and around the school. The prefects were first called to represent their school community last May when Holy Trinity was selected to host the Halton Catholic District School Board's annual Sharing the Spirit Awards. This event demonstrat- prefects. This new program gets students involved with their school community -- whether it is lending a hand to other committees, hosting school events, or tutoring for an hour. This exceptional group of teenagers is making their school a place of pride and welcome through their dedication to volunteering. As the program continues to grow, the Holy Trinity Prefect Organization looks forward to further fundraising efforts, community service initiatives, and implementation of a tutoring/mentorship program. Students must apply at the beginning of the academic year and undergo an interview to join. Teenagers comes in all shapes and sizes, but the Prefect Program at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School is proving everyday that we are all capable of making our communities -- whether it be at the municipal, provincial or national level -- an even better place to be.
