Town should have cat bylaw 11 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 27, 2009 Continued from page 6 logged and exhausted. I don't know why she didn't try the boogie board. One of the ducklings had drowned by this point, and the other four were close to it, so me being me, in my clothes, I got into the freezing water, and one by one scooped these ducklings up, and put them in a cardboard box. Mama was there with me the whole time. I put them in a towel and kept them under my shirt for a half an hour or so. By this time my husband and son were up and helping me. When the babies had dried and started wiggling and peeping again, I put them back in the box and tried to get mama to follow me to the pond, but it was dark, and she would go no further than the gate, and would keep flying back to the pool. So, I sat there on the deck, with these babies under my shirt and she sat right next to me for the next two hours, until the sun came up, and then I tried to lead her to the pond again. This time she followed me up Stoneybrook Trail, onto Bishop's Gate, across Upper Middle Road (by this time she was walking side by side with me (too cute, and man, could she walk fast) then down Upper Middle to the pond. We got her into the water, where her mate met her, and released the four ducklings, who instantly swam to mama. We went to the creek an hour later, and there were only three ducklings. Went again today, and still only three ducklings; I guess the fourth was just not strong enough. People should not let their cats out to roam. This cat has been responsible for killing nests of baby bunnies, robins, cardinals, etc., all over the neighbourhood. This cat did not eat the ducklings, it tore them to pieces and left them in the nest. People have complained, but nothing has been done about it. I would think a responsible cat owner would at the very least be concerned for the safety of their pet, if not for the carnage it perpetrates on helpless baby animals. Who would want their cat roaming outside overnight? We live on a ravine, where there are coyotes and foxes. The Oakville Humane Society told me Oakville does not have a cat bylaw. My dog is required to wear a licence, be kept on my property, and on a leash while out in public. Why are cat owners not required to do the same? I will be contacting my town councillor and asking how to go about asking the town to consider such a bylaw for cats. According to the humane society, other municipalities, such as Milton, have such bylaws. I encourage anyone who feels this would be an appropriate bylaw to have in place, to please contact their councillor and express your concerns.
