"When like-minded people intersect with each other, good things happen," he said. The Mississauga campus is initially expected to provide academic programming for 1,760 students, but that number is expected to grow to 5,500 when a second phase of construction is undertaken at some undetermined date in the future. "When like-minded people intersect with each other, good things happen." Dr. Robert Turner, Sheridan president The college currently offers programs to 15,000 full-time and 35,000 part-time students and is growing at a rate of about six per cent a year. "Sheridan is just going to continue to grow at that pace because our communities continue to grow," said Turner. The plan for a permanent campus in Mississauga Canada's sixth largest city has been in the works for the last two years, but was announced on Monday in conjunction with an announcement of $15.6 million in funding from the federal government's Knowledge Infrastructure Program. The campus, which will be located in Mississauga's downtown core, will have a particular emphasis on providing skills training and bridge programs that will help foreign-trained professionals find suitable employment in Canada. Last chapter inked for north There was remarkably little fanfare, as the Town finally inked the last chapter in the saga of north Oakville development that has dominated local politics for the last decade. On Monday night, Town council approved the North Oakville West Secondary Plan. With that approval, the last remaining piece of the planning puzzle is in place, and the vision for the entire area north of Dundas Street is complete. The plan for the lands west of Sixteen Mile Creek sees employment lands dominating the area between Hwy. 25 (Bronte Road) and Tremaine Road. Parkland and a linked Natural Heritage System of green space and wildlife corridors will fill the majority of the land between Hwy. 25 and the creek. The new Oakville hospital will be built on a 50-acre site on the northwest corner of Third Line and Dundas Street. A secondary plan for the lands east of Sixteen Mile Creek which will see most of the residential development was finalized in the summer of 2007. 2008 HAMILTON READERS CHOICE AWARD People's Choice Award Winner 3 Years in a Row...
