7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, June 4, 2009 Time for action on hospital Royal Windsor Energy Centre Continued from page 6 I have hammered away at this issue, sponsoring a petition, a letter-writing campaign, and by bringing the issue to the Legislature at every opportunity. Mr. Flynn has been silent. His recent revelation suggests my efforts are having an impact and the Liberals, ever more concerned about electoral success than the people in the communities they serve, are setting themselves up for the 2011 election campaign. The Liberals have extracted many millions in extra taxation from Halton residents through their unexpected Health Care Tax. They haven't used those funds to improve the access to health care for Oakville residents. The care available at Oakville Trafalgar is wonderful. However, there isn't enough capacity available at that facility for a town of 170,000 people. OTMH was built to accommodate a population of perhaps half that. Building projects and redevelopments over the years have extended that capacity. It's time for Mr. Flynn and his Liberal government to stop giving us shots of politics and start providing the necessary prescription to improve access to health care here in Oakville. It's time to drop the politics from the provision of our health care, and do the right thing by fast tracking the construction of the new hospital facility. Environmental Review Public Open House #2 Northland Power Inc. (Northland Power), an industry leading independent power producer in Ontario, has commenced an environmental review of constructing and operating a combined-cycle natural gas-fuelled electricity generating facility of approximately 850 MW, known as the Royal Windsor Energy Centre (the Project), on a site located at 2400/2430 Royal Windsor Drive in Mississauga (see map). The Project is subject to the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (the Act) and Regulation 116/01. Under this Act and its supporting regulations, the Project will be subject to an environmental review that will require affected stakeholders. Northland Power is committed to consulting and working with the public and stakeholder groups throughout the development of the Project. The consultation process will seek public and stakeholder input regarding local environmental and socio-economic conditions, facility design, Project benefits and mitigation/management plans. You are invited to our second Public Open House where we will review the Project and provide you with the results of the Environmental Review. Representatives of Northland Power and Golder Associates will be in attendance to discuss the Project and answer your questions. Letter to the editor Oakville Literacy Council grateful for support at annual book sale On behalf of everyone at the Oakville Literacy Council, we would like to thank the people of Oakville for their generous support of our recent used book sale at Hopedale Mall. The money we raised supports our adult literacy program, in which trained volunteer tutors work one-on-one with local adults to help them improve their reading, writing, and math skills. Some learners are seeking skills for further independence, while others are upgrading for better employment or educational opportunities. Thank you to everyone who donated books, volunteered time, and shopped at the sale. See you next year.
