3 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 10, 2009 A boost for public transit Continued from page 1 in bringing quality of community even further forward by enhancing the capacity of people in communities to take advantage of public transit," said George Smitherman, deputy premier. Director of Transit Services Barry Cole said the new transit facility will occupy nearly its entire 16-acre site making it far larger than the existing five-acre facility site. The new facility is desperately needed if transit expansion is to be possible in the future. "We have no more room (in the existing facility) to put any buses, we have no more room to park any cars, we have five hoists, one of them is a wheel hoist that won't even allow you to do full maintenance and we can't add anymore," said Cole. "So, we've hit a wall. What this new facility does is not only allow us to rehabilitate, but rehabilitate on a site that will facilitate growth. This facility will allow us to have a fleet up to 225 buses (it currently has around 100). It will allow us to accommodate a staff of up to 500 employees and most importantly it will allow us to build on the new service design we are implementing in September with the grid system." Smitherman and Baird credited Oakville MP Terence Young and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn with badgering their respective governments into diverting funds to the transit facility project. Mayor Rob Burton noted that without the provincial and federal cash, the Town might simply never have been able to afford the facility.
