The purpose of this committee will be to provide ongoing advice to the boards on matters relating to the education of Aboriginal students and to assist the school boards in identifying the needs of the Aboriginal communities in Halton. The boards invite parents, community members and community agencies that meet the following criteria to submit an application: · interested in developing an awareness and understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit history, traditions and culture for all students; · interested in enhancing First Nation, Métis and Inuit students' sense of belonging in order to foster success; and · interested in increasing the participation of First Nations, Métis and Inuit parents, students, communities and organizations. The Ministry of Education has identified Aboriginal education as one of its key priorities with a focus on meeting two primary challenges by the year 2016 -- to improve achievement among First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and to close the gap between Aboriginal and non-aboriginal students. Currently, there are roughly 3,200 Aboriginal people living in Halton and 31 per cent of this population are school-aged children, according to board staff. The deadline for applications is July 6.
