As a result of the new programs, residents are now diverting just over 60 per cent of waste or 27,448 tonnes of garbage away from the landfill. I thank Halton residents for their commitment to the environment and for making the new waste collection programs such a success! Your ongoing participation plays an important role in protecting and preserving the environment for generations to come. I encourage every resident to continue to take actions to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to divert more than 60 percent of waste away from Halton's landfill site. printers are accepted at the Halton Waste Management Site for a small fee. Halton Region is now holding several Special Waste Drop-off Days to make the recycling of household hazardous waste and electronic waste more convenient. Many residents often ask how to dispose of specific items, instead of sending them to the landfill. I am encouraged by this trend because it demonstrates we are changing how we look at our waste. Below you will find some household items with options for reusing or recycling. Take It Back! Halton is a directory of local businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipal facilities that take back many common household materials, to be reused, recycled or disposed of. The following items are currently accepted by local partners. Batteries Ink & Toner Cartridges Cell Phones Light Bulbs Natural Cork Medications Electronics Paint Eye Glasses Plastic Plant Pots and Flats Plastic Shopping Bags Refrigerators & Freezers Sharps (needles & syringes) Old Vehicles & Auto components Cardboard www.halton.ca/waste The following bags are not accepted and will not be collected: Metal and Appliances Metal and appliances are collected by Halton Region on a call-in basis only. You must schedule a metal and appliance pick up date before placing material out for collection. Contact Halton Region by dialing 311or 905-825-6000 or 1-866-4HALTON (1-866-442-5866). Plastic Bags Reduce your waste--use reusable shopping bags or bins when visiting the grocery store or mall. Plastic shopping bags can be taken back to participating retailers as part of Take it Back! Halton to be recycled into more bags or other plastic items. Plastic bags marked as "Oxo-biodegradable" are not accepted for recycling as they cause contamination with regular plastic bags. Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Materials such as batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, paint, chlorine, pesticides and motor oil can harm the environment if disposed of incorrectly. Bring these materials to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot located at the Halton Waste Management Site at 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton. Household hazardous waste will be recycled, refined or disposed of safely, free of charge (20 L limit). Unwanted electronics should not go in the landfill. Most parts of electronics steel, glass, copper, aluminum, plastics and precious metals can be recycled to make new products.
