11 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, July 16, 2009 Environmental Awareness Day at Trafalgar Village Saturday This Saturday isn't just another busy day at Trafalgar Village on Cross Avenue. Tim Hortons and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce will be teaming up for their first annual Environmental Awareness Day. The entire community is expected to participate, from politicians and police to businesses and residents. The Environmental Awareness Day is both a litter removal and environmental awareness education event. There will be recycling and waste disposal displays from Tim Hortons and WasteCo. The Inorganic Market, a citizen-based organization that raises awareness about the issue of electronic waste, will also be collecting small electronic waste for recycling. The only items accepted for collection are: cell phones and chargers, wires and cables, desktops, laptops, mice, iPods, MP3 players, circuit boards, UPS' and PDAs. The Toronto Argonauts cheerleaders will also be on hand cheering on the participants. The event kicks off at the Tim Hortons parking lot at 111 Cross Ave. at 11:30 a.m. with a free barbecue lunch sponsored by M&M Meat Shops as well as entertainment provided by DJ Central. Members of the Kerr Village BIA and Scouts Canada Oakville 2nd Oakville Troop A Venturers will be in attendance, as well as exhibits from Oak-land Ford Lincoln, Oakville Toyota, Home Depot, and Reboot Canada. At noon, a ceremony will take place to launch the event and to thank the community and the many guests for their participation. Guests will include Oakville MP Terence Young, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Ward 3 Councillor Mary Chapin. After the ceremony, everyone is invited to put on a pair of gloves and parade down Cross Avenue to pick up litter. Awareness packages will be available for business owners and residents of the community, packages will contain information on the Green Bin Program, proper recycling procedures and hazardous waste disposal information provided by the Region of Halton. At around 2 p.m., participants will return to the Tim Hortons parking lot to dispose of any litter collected and to enjoy refreshments supplied by Tim Hortons and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. trafalgar rd. q.e.w. Open parking lot volunteers needed Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton (BBBSH) are the official parking lot attendants at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open July 20-26 at the Glen Abbey Golf Course. The RCGA will, in turn, make a significant donation to BBBSH for the service. There will be two, five-hour shifts for each day of the Open. Volunteer incentives include: passes to the Open (restrictions apply), T-shirt, water and the chance to bump into a PGA professional or one of the many celebrities such as Kevin Costner or Steve Nash.
