5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, July 16, 2009 Town turns to pesticide to curb Giant Hogweed The Town of Oakville Forestry section will be implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques to control the spread of Giant Hogweed, one of the most invasive plant species in North America. To protect residents, Town staff will apply a prescribed pesticide to areas of Sixteen Mile Creek north of Upper Middle Creek Park and south of Dundas Street, as well as in Joshua's Creek Park. Signs will be posted in the affected areas before and after application. IPM techniques, which include chemical and non-chemical control methods, will be implemented for the next two to five years. "Forestry staff have developed a plan to control Giant Hogweed," said John McNeil, Manager of Forestry and Cemetery Services for to harm human skin, producing burn-like symptoms that can be severe. Residents are advised not to touch Giant Hogweed if it is found in their gardens, but to call a licensed exterminator to have it removed. If residents choose to remove the plant themselves, they need to wear synthetic, waterproof clothing, gardening gloves and eye goggles. Professional staff at garden centres can advise residents on what products and methods to use. The Town is able to spray the prescribed pesticide under the Ministry of Environment Pesticide Regulations because Giant Hogweed is considered a poisonous plant.
