Several dozen residents from both Oakville and Mississauga waved signs and Dalton McGuinty yelled slogans outside Clarkson's Electrovaya facility, calling on the premier to scrap plans to bring a gas-fired power plant to the area. The protest comes as the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) examines bids from four companies hoping to get the contract to build and operate the power plant. If the company TransCanada is successful in its bid, the 900-megawatt Oakville Generating Station will be established on the Ford-owned lands, located at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. If any of the other three companies are successful, the plant will be built just across the border in Mississauga. Neither option is acceptable to the protesters who fear emissions from the plant will only add to the already over polluted Clarkson Airshed. To make this belief known, many protesters waved signs reading `Stop the Power Plant-Our Health is at Risk' while another read `Please Mr. McGuinty Don't Make My Children Live Under JON CURRIE / OAKVILLE BEAVER POWER PROTEST: Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion joined Mississauga-South MPP Charles Sousa in speaking to protesters about the proposed installation of a natural gas-fired power plant in the Clarkson area after protesters quickly organized when they heard Premier Dalton McGuinty was to hold a press conference in Clarkson Tuesday afternoon. Despite assurances by the Premier's press officials that he would address the protesters, McGuinty's official vehicle sped by following the media conference. Federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has appointed a noted Toronto businesswoman, Deborah Gillis, to be the party's candidate for the Halton riding in the next federal election. The announcement Monday means the riding association won't have a nomination contest to select its own candidate. "I'm delighted to have the opportunity to represent the Liberal Party in Halton and very proud to have the Deborah Gillis support of Michael Ignatieff," said Gillis, a long-time Liberal and the vice-president of the non-profit organization, Catalyst, which promotes the advancement of women in business. The 44-year-old Gillis was appointed to the riding due to her strong skills and because the Liberal Party wants at least one third of its candidates to be female, said Liberal Senator David Smith, the party's national campaign co-chair. Smith said former Liberal Leader Stephane Dion appointed five people as candidates in Ontario for the fall, 2008 election -- four of whom were female.
