Canadians are arming themselves with knowledge on how to fight back against creeping gas prices. "Fuel economy is directly related to vehicle care, but when gas prices rise, many motorists hunker down and don't take proper care of their vehicles," said Kelly Williams, racecar driver and spokesperson for Car Care Canada's "Be Car Care Aware" consumer education program. Under-inflated tires can impact the vehicle's fuel economy. When tires aren't inflated properly, it can cost two-to-three kilometers per litre. 2. Replace oil regularly. Dirty or substandard oil can reduce fuel economy by 4 kilometres for each 10 litres 3. Dirty air filters can also waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve mileage by as much as 10 per cent, saving about 10 cents per litre. 4. Worn or dirty spark plugs can cause misfiring, which wastes fuel. 5. Vehicle gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing altogether waste gas. About 17 per cent of vehicles on the road have gas cap problems, causing millions of litres of gas to vaporize every year. 6. Regular vehicle maintenance improves gas mileage by an average of 4.1 per cent. Five Driving Tips for Fuel Saving: 1. Observe the speed limit and use cruise control while on the highway. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 100-kilometres-per hour. 2. Combine trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance. 3. Don't haul unneeded items. An extra 45 kilograms in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1-2 per cent. An unused roof rack and accessories also add weight and drag. 4. Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower your gas mileage by 33 per cent on the highway and five per cent in the city. 5. Avoid excessive idling. Idling gets 0 kilometres per litre!
