Vol. 52 No. 101 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" Oakville pilot died helping others By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Lucky lotto lady By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF To so many he was their only lifeline -- a hero who brought aid to those in need and who gave his life trying to bring help to the helpless. Today friends and family are mourning the loss of Oakville native Frank Toews Jr., 35, who was killed Aug. 1, when the plane he was flying for African Inland Missions (AIM) crashed in Nairobi, Kenya. As an aviator for AIM, Toews's job was to fly supplies to missions located all over Africa. His father, Frank Toews, Frank Toews Jr. said this was important because in some areas the roads were so poorly maintained or dangerous that supplies could not be brought in any other way. "People who live in the remote areas have no access to medical help for one thing, so a lot of the work he was doing is flying medical aid," said Frank. "They also make sure that, if there are emergencies out there, they can either evacuate or bring aid to these people. This includes indigenous people, missionary people, there's no favouritism or anything like that." Toews described one such emergency in his blog, NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Frank page 8 GOOD VIBES: Two-time $50,000 lottery winner Lisa Dafoe rests on the hood of the brand new Pontiac Vibe she bought with her most recent lottery windfall. To say she's lucky would be a bit of an understatement. Oakville resident Lisa Dafoe is still ecstatic following a $50,000 lottery win on Tuesday, June 30. The realization that she was a winner was exciting she noted, but the moment was made all the more amazing by the fact that this is not the first time she's won. "I was shocked to think I'd won it twice," said Dafoe. Dafoe's first lottery win took place back in 2003. Working as a personal trainer in Burlington, she scratched a Bingo lottery ticket on her lunch resulting in her first $50,000 jackpot. "I thought I was going to have a heart attack," said Dafoe. "I ran into the gym and asked my boss to double check it and she couldn't believe it and I called my family and my brother and he couldn't even believe it and I couldn't go back to work after that. I was so amazed by that one." For this most recent win, Dafoe managed to stay at work, but perhaps only because she thought she had won $5,000 instead of $50,000. The true total was made clear when Dafoe took the ticket back to the store. "The Ontario Lottery Corporation called the vendor at the Hasty Market and they verified it was $50,000," said Dafoe. "I was amazed." See Four page 4 DORVAL DRIVE I WYECROFT RD. SPEERS RD.
