Vol. 52 No. 125 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2009 40 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Town defends actions at OMB hearing By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The troubled relationship Oakville residents have with industrial areas was front and centre at Town Hall, Wednesday morning, during the second day of an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing that could decide whether a 900megawatt gas-fired power plant comes to Oakville. Ford of Canada and TransCanada have called the hearing to appeal an interim control bylaw and Official Plan amendment, passed by the Town in March, which bans the construction and expansion of power plants with a capacity greater than 10-megawatts. If these two companies succeed in their appeal, TransCanada will be one step closer to building and operating the Oakville Generating Station on the Ford-owned lands at 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. With the proposed power plant only 400 metres from a residential area, Town lawyer John Doherty called on Assistant Clerk and Manager of Licencing and Bylaw PRELIMINARY CONCEPTUAL RENDERING PROVIDED BY STANTEC ARCHITECTURE LTD. NATURAL SETTING: Designers of the new Oakville Hospital on Dundas Street and Third Line promise to provide every patient with a view of nature, either an exterior view or one that overlooks an interior courtyard. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2011 with an expected occupancy by 2014 or 2015. New hospital design unveiled at open house By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Ford page 4 It is going to be one of the most beautiful, state-of-the-art hospitals in the province. That's what is being said about the new Oakville Hospital by those involved in the planning and design of the facility. Residents had the chance to see what the new multi-million dollar site will look like through an illustrated conceptual site plan on display at an open house held Tuesday night at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The site plan included exterior sketches of the building, floor plans and how the site itself will be developed. The new facility, which has the working title "This is an exciting opportunity to do something great for the community. The community has told us what they want to see in the hospital and we're listening. This is a community hospital." Bill Bailey, vice-president of redevelopment with Halton Healthcare Services of the Oakville Hospital until an official name is determined, will be built on a 50-acre site located at Third Line and Dundas Street. Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2011, with an expected occupancy in late 2014 or early 2015. "This is so exciting because not too often does a town have the opportunity to build a hospital," said Bill Bailey, vice president of redevelopment with Halton Healthcare Services. "This is an exciting opportunity to do something great for the community. The community has told us what they want to see in the hospital and we're listening. This is a community hospital." The Oakville Hospital will have 457 beds when it opens, with a capacity of 602 beds. "We built in additional flexibility into our design to allow for growth," said Bailey. The hospital will have a four-storey portion that is the same size as OTMH, which will house things like the emergency department See Hospital page 3 20% SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, ONLY!
