Schubert rounds out program 35 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 6, 2009 Continued from page 29 "I remember when I was in science class in Grade 10 and I put a recording of this on and even the kids who were deep into heavy metal thought it was great. When the famous tune starts playing, it grabs people's attention in a way that few pieces do." Schubert's Mass in G is paired with the work for the concerts. Although Schubert was a contemporary and even knew Beethoven while living in his hometown of Vienna, his career was very different. Unlike Beethoven, Schubert never achieved international recognition in his lifetime. The mass was written in 1815 when Schubert was 18 years old. Rumour has it he wrote it in less than a week, which has not cheapened it in the eyes of musicians and music lovers, as it is one of his more well-known masses. Demuynck said the mass contrasts nicely with the Beethoven symphony. "The Schubert Mass is written for a substantially smaller orchestra and was intended for church performance and although it is from approximately the same place and time, it is a big contrast," he said. "It is a very much more of a Mozartian or Haydnesque kind of piece. It is nice to hear the different kinds of music that were being produced in Vienna at that time." Weekly rehearsals for the concert started after Labour Day. Demuynck said the pieces, especially the Beethoven, require stamina from the musicians. Finding enough energy from the group has not been a problem, however, as the musicians are excited to be part of this momentous event, Demuynck said. "Many people in the orchestra have played it before and some people in the choir have sung it before, but you can't get tired of it," he said. "They are all so keen to perform it." ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER SOPRANOS UNITE: Sopranos (l to r) Valerie Taylor, Linda Eggers, Eryl Venner and Arlene Wisser pay close attention to their music during a rehearsal.
