Though I am extremely fortunate to be the recipient of such generosity, I cannot be ignorant to the hidden reality that is revealed to many of us as we grow up. Misfortune and poverty is closer than we think. It may be a sick little boy or girl who will wake up on Christmas morning in a hospital bed. It may be the struggling mom or dad who will lay awake on Christmas Eve crying because they couldn't afford to buy their baby a toy on their first Christmas. It may be men and women who live on the streets battling the weather and hunger, even on a day meant to fill our hearts with joy. Though we may have many questions, the answers shouldn't matter. The names of these individuals and how they ended up in such devastating situations is not relevant. Just because some of these people do not have a home, does not mean that they are not our neighbours. The fact that our community houses such despair at any time, never mind a time meant for celebrating the gift of life, should be reason enough for many of us to rise to action. I am aware this is easier said than done. The beauty of Christmas is often lost in translation as the season is commercialized. As a high school student, I know it is easier to put our own priorities ahead of saving the world. Making a difference can seem like an impossible task. It doesn't have to be. This is the perfect time to get involved in our community and help those who are less fortunate. Oakville supports many charities, which appreciate any contribution, no matter how small. All schools collect canned food for food drives and The Salvation Army is always looking for donations. It's time for teenagers to make a difference. The greatest gift you will receive this holiday season is knowing that you reached out to someone in need.
