Our herd is travelling in Uganda this month, slowly crossing great distances. My brother, sister and I have been tired, but my grandmother urges us onward, so we keep trekking forward. My grandmother told us a story to inspire us to focus on our future destination. She told us the story of Justine, Richard and Robert Ojambo -- three bright, impoverished boys who were orphaned in Uganda when their mother Pheobe died of AIDS. The boys, helped by a Dutch missionary, survived to graduate from school and attend European universities. Inspired by the memory of their mother, they returned from their studies to Uganda to work with impoverished rural women and children. In 2003, the brothers founded the Pheobe Educational Fund for AIDS orphans and Vulnerable Children (PEFO), in their mother's name. PEFO began with a microfinance project for women, but then set up self-growth clubs for children and paid for school fees, uniforms and food. PEFO is now supporting more than 300 orphans and vulnerable children, and 200 grannies who care for them. The Stephen Lewis Foundation has supported PEFO by purchasing a brick-making machine to build houses for grannies. PEFO also helps by creating huge organic gardens, with spinach, onions, chives and more, all pesticidefree, to help feed the grannies and orphans. $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) offers regional families a chance to celebrate the upcoming holidays while supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation's efforts to Turn The Tide of HIV/AIDS and support some 300 projects like PEFO in 15 African countries. Heavenly Night to benefit Cambodian girls This Christmas, Canadian singer Kelita is not fundraising for toys to put under a child's Christmas tree, but a safe house for little girls in Cambodia to escape the sex slavery trade -- a place where they'll be able to be little girls briefly enough to want a new toy. That safe house will be called Heavenly Hope Centre. It will be funded from proceeds from the Dec. 5 Heavenly Night concert Kelita will stage at Oakville's The Meeting House. The concert will be Saturday, Dec. 5. It will run from 7-10 p.m. at The Meeting House, 2700 Bristol Circle. Not only will the concert feature Kelita and her all-star band, but also well-known Gospel singer Hiram Joseph. There will also be a presentation by Brian McConaghy from the Ratanak Foundation.
