Church bells will ring 350 times Sunday If you think you hear a lot of church bells ringing Sunday -- you will be. A number of churches in Oakville have accepted an invitation from the global stage to ring their bells for climate change. "Church bells, through the centuries, have been used to sound public alarms about imminent danger. Church bells will be ringing to alert the public to the imminent dangers of climate change," said St. Jude's honourary assistant pastor, Rev. Dr. Mervyn Russell. St. Jude's will join in the call to ring its impressive bell 350 times, as required. Russell said it will take place on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. to coincide with a church service taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark at the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The intention is to draw people's attention to the need to reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 390 to 350 parts per million. The International Panel of Climate Change Scientists have calculated that 350 parts per million is the maximum level of carbon dioxide concentration permissible in the atmosphere before the start of irreversible, destructive climate change begins to happen. The World Council of Churches has invited all churches to participate in the bell ringing, said Russell.
