Blades sharp on home ice There haven't been many nights this season when Oakville Blades fans have left Joshua's Creek Arenas disappointed. The Blades completed the home portion of their regular-season schedule last weekend with three wins in as many nights. Oakville finished the Ontario Junior A Hockey League campaign with a 215-1 record on home ice and has won 12 of its last 14 games at Joshua's Creek. The most significant of the Blades' three victories last weekend came Friday against the rival Georgetown Raiders. Kellan Lain broke a 5-5 tie with 7:14 to go in regulation to give the Blades a 6-5 win over Georgetown, practically locking up a second-place finish for Oakville (44-9-1) in the league standings. Ryan Murphy (two), Steven Guzzo, Dustin Alcock and Kyle Badham also scored Friday for Oakville. Mike Morissette earned the victory in goal after relieving starter Daniel Savelli early in the second period. The Blades followed up that win with a 4-2 triumph over the Huntsville Otters Saturday and a 4-1 victory over the Collingwood Blues Sunday. Nick Rivait, Josh Ranalli, Nick Scamurra and Lain tallied for Oakville against Huntsville, while Morissette stopped 27 shots for the win. Savelli made 26 saves the following night against the Blues, when Kyle Lysaght (two), Josh Ranalli and Alcock netted the Oakville markers. The Blades wrap up the regular season this weekend with games in Villanova and Mississauga. The playoffs will likely begin the following weekend. The Hawks won the senior girls' volleyball provincial Catholic championship the previous weekend. "I didn't think you'd ever see that," said Laurin, also the school's phys-ed head. "What an accomplishment for both our programs." The Holy Trinity Titans and St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders also competed at the all-Catholic basketball tournament, each winning their first game before being eliminated in the second round. All three teams now shift their focus to the Halton playoffs, which begin today (Wednesday). The third-place Hawks host the Georgetown Rebels at 3:30 p.m., fourth-place Aquinas is home to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 4 p.m., and the second-ranked Titans entertain the Bishop Reding Royals at 4:45 p.m. Winners from those three games, along with the victor in the Nelson Lords/Abbey Park Eagles contest at 3 p.m., advance to Friday's semifinals.
