Josie Andrews. The kick-off to all the excitement began the week before March Break with a Kindergarten Leadership Jamboree. Our school was very lucky to host kindergarten students from Highview Elementary School in the Hamilton Wentworth School Board and their teacher, performer MaryCatherine Rolston, aka "Fairy Dazzle", in the dramatic rendition of Eric Carle's story "The Grouchy Ladybug." The story was brought to life with the aim of teaching our students about the importance of social skills in bullying prevention. Mary-Catherine Rolston and Josie Andrews both stated that "inspiration and leadership doesn't have to rest with our senior students, for our younger masters of today will be tomorrow's community and world leaders. (Written by Sean McCartan) The second event leading up to Oakville Poetry Month is our Poetic Art Celebration stewarded by local artist Dawn-Angela Seeley and Mme. Josie Andrews with Miss Virginia Wood's 5/6 Literacy class. For this literary event, students have been writing poems inspired by paintings created by Dawn-Angela's art students. Dawn-Angela Seeley is a local artist and author. The poems will be laminated, framed and displayed along with the paintings that inspired them, at Timothy's Coffee on Lakeshore and Reynolds, in downtown Oakville, during the month of April. The poems will also be published in a book, thus celebrating this poetic art endeavour. The book will be available for purchase by anyone interested. There will be an official opening reception for student artists, poets, parents, teachers and guests on Sunday, April 11th, from 3:00 to 6:00. POETRY CONTEST! Hey kids! Are you interested in writing poetry? Are you interested in winning a writing contest? Well, this is the contest for you! This competition is an opportunity for students in grades 1 to 7 to shine! If you live in Oakville and are interested in entering your poem, you will have a chance of winning! Your poem will be judged by our honourable grade six students at Gladys Speers Public School. They will choose the best three entries. You can write a poem on any of these subjects: peace, healthy relationships, the Earth, the environment, sports, animals, music, hobbies, having fun, friends, family and April Fool's Day. Speaking of April, that's when the winners will be announced in the Oakville Beaver. So, good luck writing and remember to have lots of fun creating your poem!
