www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 21, 2010 · 24 Healey playing mate now at Appleby and 3S's By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville guitarist who played with the late blues-rocker Jeff Healey in the '80s is now a regular at a local restaurant where he puts on solo instrumental shows on Saturday nights. Dusty Bohdan performs his jazz, R&B and blues stylings at 3S's Restaurant Saturdays from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Bohdan, who grew up in Etobicoke with Healey, has been teaching music at Appleby College for the past six years and moved to Oakville some four years ago. At the Lakeshore Road private school he also runs a jazz band and a guitar ensemble. "It was a very enthusiastic crowd, appreciative of music," he said of his most recent show at 3S's Restaurant, which took place earlier this month. Bohdan has been a professional musician since he was a teenager, playing with several groups and he produced an instrumental, self-titled album of his BEAUTY & Spa Get `glowing' own. Bohdan and Healey both attended Etobicoke Collegiate Institute and played for several years together during that time. "We were pretty young and I went from playing in the basement to playing at all sorts of clubs around Toronto in my teenage years," Bohdan said. At the time, the music they produced was similar to the blues/classic-rock tunes of the latest Healey recordings. Healey, who was blind from very early childhood, died in 2008 of cancer at age 41. "I wrote a song for him when he passed away that will be on my next CD," Bohdan said. The instrumental piece is called I Remember Like It Was Yesterday. "It's my tribute to him and, more than anything, it's my tribute to the time we had together." Despite playing together at a young age, both musicians went on to lead separate musical careers. "When I moved to Oakville, we were just starting to re-connect and we were in contact again and when I found out what was going on with him, it was pretty sad," he said. "Everything that we had done together was right in my mind like it was yesterday." Bohdan calls himself a one-man band Dusty Bohdan playing a guitar. However, he expects some of his Appleby students will drop by at his shows occasionally and some will likely play with him on stage. Bohdan's next performance at the restaurant is Saturday, April 24.
