Blessed Sacrament champs Kurtz recognized by OHL for character, commitment John Kurtz has been named the winner of the Ontario Hockey League's Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy. The award is presented annually to OHL captain who best exemplifies the character and commitment of the former Windsor Spitfires captain who collapsed at home and died as the result of a genetic heart disease in 2008. The award holds special meaning to Kurtz, who has been the captain of the Sudbury Wolves for the past two seasons. The 20-year-old was a teammate of Renaud's in his rookie season in the OHL. "When I came into the OHL in Windsor, Mickey was the first guy to make me feel comfortable," Kurtz said Monday at a news conference to announce the award in Windsor. "As a younger guy I really looked up to him and wanted to pattern my game after him. I was really happy when I saw this award presented last year, and am really honoured to win it this year." Kurtz, who had a career-best 30 goals this year, will be presented with the award at the league's awards ceremony June 9 at the Hockey Hall of Fame. 33 · Thursday, April 22, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com SPORTSBRIEFS Merrick, Emily Schnarr, Kaitlyn Norris, Bree Gallagher, Jessica Desautels, Jazz Kennedy, Tegan Duncan, MacKenzie Sutherland and Dana Beattie.
