Having been home to a coalfired generating facility for 40 years, the residents of Mississauga demanded, and the Province agreed, another generating facility should not be placed in Lakeview. Given the population density and welldocumented poor air quality in Oakville/Mississauga/Etobicoke, why not place this power plant outside the southwest GTA? The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) considered this in its 2007 Integrated Power System Plan for Southwest GTA. It considered two sites. The most viable is Nanticoke. According to the OPA, the Nanticoke option is 5.8 per cent cheaper on a permegawatt basis than putting the power plant in Oakville. In this plan, the OPA gives the southwest GTA-sited power plant a better rating in the environmental category based on land use issues, not because of transmission losses as Mr. Cuddy suggests. Since all of the transmission right-of-ways are in place and the existing poor air quality in Oakville is not mentioned, this rating does not make sense. In the same plan, OPA gives the southwest GTA-sited power plant a better rating in the community acceptance category. Nanticoke is losing its coal-fired power plant in 2014 and wants a natural gas replacement. This is confirmed by the Mayor of Haldimand Marie Trainer. Given this, how could OPA state community acceptance for a power plant is higher in Oakville than it is in Nanticoke? We should not leave this decision to the experts, as Mr. Cuddy suggests. Forget the experts; the current Oakville location for the proposed 900 megawatt power plant fails the common sense test.
