www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 28, 2010 · 14 Catholic board anticipates funding for new Oakville school By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP Halton's Catholic school board has given the go ahead for its Lumen Christi elementary school to open in west Milton in 17 months. Board staff also anticipates receiving funding from the Province "in the very near future" for a second high school in Milton and the West Oak Trails #5 elementary school in northwest Oakville, according to a report recently reviewed by trustees. While Ontario's Ministry of Education has approved the business case for the three schools, it hasn't officially signed off yet on funding them. However, in anticipation of that approval, the board of trustees voted for school board staff to borrow the $11.3 million needed to finance the construction of Lumen Christi, which will be the first Catholic school in urban Milton on the west side of the CN railway tracks. To achieve the planned September, 2011 opening for Lumen Christi, the board wants to issue a construction contract by the end of next month. The timelines for the other schools is farther out. The proposed West Oak Trails #5 school will be located on Colonel Williams Parkway in the Richview neighbourhood west of Bronte Road, between Upper Middle Road and Dundas Street, said Giacomo Corbacio, the board's superintendent of facility services. If funding comes through from the Province, the school would probably open by 2012, but the board hasn't finalized an opening date, he said. The board hasn't completed the purchase of the approximately 15-acre site needed for its next high school in Milton, but Corbacio said the school could open as early as 2013. Students invited to Get to Know The Halton District School Board is encouraging its students to enter a contest that aims to raise awareness about the environment. The Get to Know program invites students, 19 and under, to submit artwork, a piece of writing or photographs about wildlife or biodiversity online at www.gettoknow.ca/ca/contest/promo-kit.php. Deadline is May 28. The program was started by Canadian artist Robert Bateman and this year's theme is Celebrate Biodiversity. Some of the work may be published in the 2011 Get to Know contest calendar or used for the 2011 Youth Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp. Another prize also includes a weeklong stay at the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Visit www.gettoknow.ca for more information.
