As the cabinet begins meeting monthly, its members will now hear from UWO staff members, who are gauging the need that exists in the community. The cabinet will, accordingly, assign a fundraising goal for this year's campaign. It will at least match last year's goal and likely surpass it. Cabinet members will also fan out into the community to engage groups and corporations in the fields of manufacturing, education, and service in the hope of inspiring those groups to organize employee campaigns, fundraising events and pledge donations to the campaign. Among this year's cabinet members are Dave Stewart, Senior Manager Mattamy Homes Ltd. (Manufacturing Division Chair); Domenic Lunardo Commissioner Community Services Town of Oakville (Public Service Division Chair); Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, president and CEO Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Education Division Chair); Rick Galipeau, principal consultant, Material Handling AMEC (Business Division Chair); John Wilson, Executive Director Community Living Oakville (Agency Division Chair); and Peter Turkington, Strategic Communications Solutions (New Business Division Chair). "We want to meet our goal this year," said Cardamone, adding, "We will be engaging the community to build awareness of the agencies that we support and of the impact donated dollars have on the community." "I know the need," said Cardamone who has thrown herself into the role of heading the campaign. That need, exacerbated by the economic downturn includes lineups at local food banks and waiting lists for children at the Halton Trauma Centre and those looking for a big brother or big sister. "Children can't wait," said Cardamone. But the 33 local social service agencies that are funded by the UWO do much more than address children's needs. The UWO funds agencies according to a fourpronged strategy that includes strengthening families -- from children and youths to new Canadians. It assists agencies helping seniors and their caregivers in achieving independence and wellbeing. It funds agencies dealing with people in crisis -- those grappling with addictions, violence and mental health challenges. It supports those striving for self-sufficiency through funding literacy, hunger and mental health relief. The UWO has recently adopted a new phrase to live by -- Live United. "We are encouraging everyone to embrace our theme of Live United, by taking a look around at each of their neighbours and by giving to the United Way to impact their lives and give people a better quality of life," said Cardamone. This year's UWO campaign is based on a theme of "give, believe, inspire." While admitting she's not an economist, Cardamone, a former Oakville Chamber of Commerce president, said the economy had a great impact on not only last year's campaign shortfall, but also on the increased need throughout the community. "When the economy is hurting, so are the people," she said. "We want to have a successful campaign and I believe we can do it," said Cardamone. She said it may be a matter of each person in town giving up just one cup of coffee to donate to the common good. "Oakville is not just a community of wealthy residents. We, too, have incredible need in our community. Oakville is a great place to live and we want it to be a great place to live for everybody."
