Parker, who was raised in Oakville, was a 20year veteran of the Canadian Forces. He joined up in 1989 through the regular officer training program. He completed infantry officer training and was posted to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in London, ON in 1991. Parker was deployed as a platoon commander during Operation Harmony in 1992, which saw members of the Canadian Forces engaged in United Nations peacekeeping efforts in Croatia and Sarajevo. Parker was also deployed as part of the Canadian Forces Expeditionary Force to BosniaHerzegovina where he served as a company second-in-command for the Royal Canadian Regiment.
