These prisms are part of the Town's recently launched Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) trapping project that will see 125 traps hung at various EAB hotspots throughout Oakville over the upcoming weeks. "EAB traps work as a cost-effective early warning detection system for forestry staff monitoring them throughout the summer months," said John McNeil, manager of Forestry Services. "Knowing exactly where the EAB are and the extent of the infestation, allows us to take the appropriate action in protecting Oakville's ash trees." Provided by Canadian Forest Service, EAB traps are three-dimensional triangles or prisms made of thin, corrugated, green plastic coated with sticky non-toxic glue. The traps are about 24 inches long and hang in an ash tree. To increase the attractiveness of the trap to the EAB, they are baited with a natural-based plant extract. The traps pose no risk to humans, pets or wildlife and will be hung in ash trees at a height that will likely make them undetectable. EAB is a metallic green-coloured beetle that was first confirmed in Oakville in July 2008. Experts say that it has destroyed more than 20 million trees in North America since its discovery in 2002. Oakville has approximately 177,000 ash trees or nine per cent of the town's urban forest.
