Cancer has been a part of the family, so walking annually at the local Relay for Life is one great way to raise money for research that the family knows saved their daughter's life. "It's just become part of our life," Sandy McDonald said of the Relay. "We do it every year to give back to the community, to give back to the Canadian Cancer Society because we've seen the progress that has been made and the research they've done, it's saved Shayna's life and she knows that." Shayna, Sandy's daughter, is a two-time Leukemia survivor. She was diagnosed at a very young age and was treated with chemotherapy. Now, six years later, at 14-years-old, Shayna is a healthy girl about to graduate Grade 8, who inspires others to care as she does. "We do it for Shayna," Sandy said. The creation of a new concrete skate pad and the moving of the skateboard park equipment is expected to cost around $52,000. The West Oak Trails facility will remain open until Palermo Park is ready for the equipment. Town staff say the move is being done in a way that will result in minimal skateboard park downtime with only a few days passing between the closing of the skateboard park in West Oak Trails and the opening of the skateboard park in Palermo. Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar, who brought forward the motion to move the skateboard park, said Palermo was a more appropriate location due to its distance from residences.
