For safety's sake Two Oakville youths in Canada's Top 20 under 20 The top 20 Canadian youths were recognized this week for their innovation, community contributions and excellence and two of them are from Oakville. Elyse Simpson and Justin Vanderheide, both aged 17, were chosen at the seventh annual Canada's Top 20 Under 20. The awards were presented by Youth In Motion in Toronto on June 3. Simpson is a solo musician who started her own independent music label to be a voice for unknown artists. Her business plan received the support of Halton Region and she received $5,000 from the Ontario Government's Summer Company program and Business Plan Competition. She then launched her business, Jangle Records and immediately signed two artists. Now the record label is geared towards folk, rock and alternative musicians. Through the label, Simpson markets, packages and sells music; books shows; directs photo shoots and produces artists' materials. Vanderheide wasn't satisfied with a report card system lifeguards used for their swimmers, so he wrote a computer program, called Swimgen, to make it easy to create and co-ordinate report cards. The program was launched in early 2010 and is online at www.swimgen.net. The Town of Oakville started using the software for its swimming programs and Vanderheide is working to get his program adopted across the entire country by September. 11 · Wednesday, June 9, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com MICHELLE SIU / OAKVILLE BEAVER EXTRA PRECAUTION: Reverend Dr. Morar Murray-Hayes blessed a bike by pouring oil on the chain at Maple Grove United Church on Sunday morning.
