www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 18, 2010 · 26 Spring Home and Garden White For Night By Barbara Phillips-Conroy Barbarasgardenchronicles.blogspot.com Summer evenings are the time to savour your garden. White flowers are just what you need to extend the beauty into the darker evening hours. Here are three of my favourites I hope you'll enjoy: The first is Persicaria polymorpha, which sometimes is called giant fleece flower. It's a giant standing 2 meters high and wide with beautiful white Astilbe-like blossoms that smell like buckwheat honey. It can be a little difficult to find, but well worth the search. It starts to bloom in June and continues through to September. It likes a sunny location, but will take some shade. The second is a climber called Schizophragma hydrangeoides or false climbing hydrangea. It has lovely blossoms that look very similar to a climbing hyrdrangea, but unlike a climbing hydrangea that takes years to bloom, you'll often be rewarded in the very first year. I've got it in a shady location, but know it will do well in full sun. The third is a new twist on an old-fashioned Shasta daisy called Leucanthemum x superbum `Crazy Daisy.' It is floriferous and frilly the ends of the petals even look a little like desiccated coconut. It grows about 60 cm high and wide and prefers a nice sunny location. With our gardening season as short as it is, we need to grab every hour of enjoyment we can each day. I think you'll find adding a few white flowers will give you an extra hour of garden bliss.
