Queen catches a glimpse of Sheridan's technology Though Queen Elizabeth II did not make any official stops in Oakville on her nine-day Canadian visit, she did end up seeing something developed by a local institution. The Queen visited Sheridan College's Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) at Pinewood Toronto Studios on Monday. At the centre, she was treated to a demonstration to the latest in 3D production processes. She watched the live-action filming of a scene directed by award-winning director Deepa Mehta. The scene was shot in stereoscopic 3D (glasses-free, three-dimensional technology). It was shot by a group of industry veterans who worked together with the school's faculty, students and the centre's staff researchers. "This was a great opportunity for Sheridan to showcase the power of collaboration to deliver truly innovative results," said Jeff Zabudsky, Sheridan's president and CEO. "In a very short period our partnerships with industry and academic partners such as the University of Waterloo have already achieved impressive results, and SIRT is just getting off the ground. The future looks bright in terms of what we can do to support the Ontario film, television and gaming industry's competitiveness in the years ahead." The new SIRT is an academic-industry collaboration serving Ontario's screen-based industries. 9 · Thursday, July 8, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com RYAN ALEXANDER / OAKVILLE BEAVER ACTION: Queen Elizabeth II, Premier Dalton McGuinty and director Deepa Mehta watch a live-action sequence being filmed at Sheridan College's Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) at Pinewood Toronto Studios on Monday.
