He has left the legacy of a rich and passionate life, lived with laughter, compassion, vibrant wit, encouragement, extraordinary wisdom and love. Whilst we grieve with a deep sense of loss, we realize that we have been privileged to have known and been touched by this truly unique man, whose diverse and far reaching skills, interests and immense talents have left an indelible imprint on all who knew him and he will remain forever with us and in our hearts. He understood how we are all connected and that no single person is more important than another ­ that each brings gifts and delights to enrich our individual, collective and unconscious experience of the world. Ray reached and touched so many individuals over the years, and imparted to each and every one of them a sense of hope, kindness, love, spiritual goodness, friendship, faith, fulfillment and understanding. Amongst friends, there seldom seemed to be an occasion without exhilarating and spirited dialogue on all manner of topics or meaningful and frank discussions characterized by a shared sense of mutual trust and freedom to speak one's mind. Guided by his sharp and inquiring mind, Ray steered our conversations to the kernel of any issue ­ he would listen intently, analytically, and compassionately, and, with strategic questioning, would demystify and clarify the subjects of life's conundrums whilst supporting and promoting and championing the various causes of his circle of friends. These same generous attitudes are evident in his stunning photographic images. One has only to look closely at his photographic subjects or to stand back and take a more universal view, to touch upon Ray's unique genius ­ a sympathetic and insightful distillation of the true essence of a person, place or of the human condition. His greatest sadness was that he was leaving behind his beloved Ann. These two wonderful people achieved the nearly impossible task of maintaining two completely and delightfully distinct and powerful identities and personalities, while keeping their personal connection to each other inextricably intact. Ann was the most special person in his life, and he in hers. Ray navigated the final stage of his journey at the Carpenter Hospice where he was afforded respect, kindness, dignity and unending care and affection from the staff and volunteers. As many of you are aware, Ray derived great pleasure and comfort from working in his garden and in connecting with nature. The Hospice uses the image of a butterfly as its figurative symbol, and Ray felt a deeply personal connection with this as a metaphor for his own life. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers would be appreciated by Ray's family and may be directed to The Carpenter Hospice at www.thecarpenterhospice. com - proceeds will be dedicated to the planting of a Butterfly Garden on the property.
