By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Phantom children playing hide and seek, ghostly voices in the halls, a door that opens and closes on its own. Many strange things have been report- ed at the Spruce Lane Farmhouse, a red- brick Victorian-era home located within Bronte Provincial Park. Built in 1899, the building was home to the Breckon family, whose members lived in the home until the 1950s. Today the home, which remains fur- nished in the style of the Victorian Era, is a key attraction at Bronte Provincial Park with park staff taking curious visitors on ghost tours of the supposedly haunted house throughout the month of August. The atmosphere created for these tours is so spooky, the ghosts are almost not required. The tours are held at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. so the sun is setting or has already set when they take place. True to the style of the time, the home is lit with kerosene lamps casting an eerie glow throughout its interior. In the hallway, there is a photo of the three Breckon children, which is so creepy it could almost serve as an exam- ple of the kind of photos one should hang in a haunted house. The three children, Gordon, Christine and Alice all stare out from the portrait, their expressionless faces frozen in black and white. It is very eerie, the reason being that the flash, the chemicals that they used back then make it look like that. If you smiled and showed your teeth the flash would reflect off your teeth and make you look even more ghoulish, so you couldnt smile.
