Whether its travelling around the world or making a difference here at home in your com- munity, we need to find ways to demonstrate to young people that the things they do matter. The small actions that make up any given day accu- mulate, from the decisions about how we get from point A to point B, whether we drive, walk, take our bike, use public transit, to our decisions about choosing more locally-grown products, said Trudeau. This is not a philosophy we are teaching to our young people nearly enough in our schools and our communities. Were valuing success all wrong. Its still based on how much money you make, what kind of car you drive, how big your home is, rather than valuing success based on how much you are able to give, not necessarily in terms of money, but how much you are able, through your efforts and your involvement, to shape the world around you. When a young woman in the audience asked how she could get her concerns out there Trudeau said the secret is to start small. Start small organizations, start small cam- paigns, make a little difference and suddenly you realize, Wow, I can actually do this, or I got a little legitimacy, or I got some coverage in the local paper, said Trudeau. The speech to the Rotary Club was part of Trudeaus day-long visit to Oakville, which also saw the Papineau MP and rising star within the Liberal Party attend an Oakville Federal Liberal breakfast, visit a local seniors residence, visit Kerr Street Ministries and a local Habitat for Humanity build site. Im constantly impressed by the level of engagement of this community, said Trudeau, in an interview with the Oakville Beaver. Trudeau took time to endorse Oakville Federal Liberal Candidate Max Khan stating, We have such an extraordinary candidate in Max Khan. He is absolutely a heavyweight among candidates himself. After two years in the political arena, Trudeau said stepping into his fathers shoes is not some- thing he is striving for above all else. First of all my father had his own shoes and he did a great job, and the way I look at it is he raised his sons with his values and his perspective on the world and gave us tools, not to go out and defend his legacy, but to build our own legacies and figure out our own ways of making a difference in life. My brother is a documentary film maker and I started my life as an activist, as a teacher, said Trudeau. The focus for me isnt on the end result, its not focused on getting some label after my name. Its about making the biggest difference I possibly can and if it turns out Im not a very good politician, Ill go back to teaching or Ill find some other way of making a difference where I can, said Trudeau.
