Your first responsibility as an MPP is not to get into cabinet, he said. Your first responsi- bility as an MPP is to look after your con- stituents, so thats what I have done consis- tently. The musical-chairs style cabinet shuffle took place last week. No ministers were moved out of cabinet, only shuffled to different roles, and two new positions were added. Premier Dalton McGuinty added former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray (minister of research and innovation) and former Ottawa mayor Bob Chiarelli (infrastructure minister) into the cabinet. Flynn said the two new additions to cabinet are experienced, well-rounded individuals that will add their knowledge to cabinet. Flynn said he was slightly disappointed with not getting into cabinet and hopes to get such a role eventually. I think its just part of being a human being that when you arent picked to do some- thing that you would eventually like to do, I think there is a sense of disappointment, but its not keeping me up at night, he said. Flynn has openly opposed the Liberal gov- ernments plans to build a 900 megawatt gas- fired power plant in southeast Oakville on Ford-owned lands. However, he would not speculate whether his opposition to the provinces decision is the reason why he was kept out of cabinet. I would be less than honest if I said that may or may not have been a consideration. Thats a question thats much better asked of the premier, Flynn said. Im really occupied right now serving my community and making sure that power plant is not built on the Ford lands. Ive been very clear about that with the premier. Flynn added that when he serves in cabinet he doesnt want it to be at the expense of his constituents and noted that his political career is based around serving his community. Politics is about your constituents, he said. Id be honoured to serve in cabinet but at the same time thats not my first priority. My first priority is the people of Oakville and Ill do my best to represent them and if it means not being in cabinet I can live with that. After the shuffle Flynn has retained his role as parliamentary assistant to the minister of education. MPP Flynn left out of latest cabinet shuffle
