With the force machine complete, the par- ticipant then runs to a water-filled hose, which is dragged for eight feet before being used to extinguish a target. The participant then grabs a 185- pound res- cue mannequin, which needs to be dragged about 100 feet backward. Henderson and Van Zandbergen were able to complete this course in just over one minute and 29 seconds to secure third place in the tan- dem. Oakvilles relay team completed the course in one minute and five seconds (a new team record), earning them the bronze medal. That was way above where we were project- ed to go. We performed extremely well on relay day. Every little thing matters and we perfected what we needed to and everyone did their part, said Henderson. We raced DND (Department of National Defence) Canada in the bronze medal match, but were put out of the semi-finals by the team that eventually ended up winning, Kamloops, B.C. They broke a world record when they faced us (just over one minute and three seconds). Henderson credits the Oakville teams suc- cess to the amount of time and energy each team member is willing to put into training for these events. He said the team might be able to go even further if it is able to secure funding to pur- chase a tower, similar to the one used in the event, on which the team could train. Henderson pointed out not only the Oakville team would benefit from such a purchase as the endurance course creates not only better com- petitors, but better firefighters, as well. The team will be participating in a regional event in Pittsburgh on Oct. 2, before attending the World Scott Firefit Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Nov. 8. Anyone interested in helping to fund the Oakville Fire Departments training tower can e-mail oakvillecombatteam@hotmail.com. When this is complete the participant must race down the tower and complete the force machine process of the obstacle course. This involves hitting a 160-pound block with an eight-pound sledgehammer until the block has been driven a certain distance. It simulates breaking through a door or breaking through a roof with an axe, said Henderson in a previous interview.
