Halton Police said at some time during the night thieves cut a hole in the roof of the Chapters Book Store, located next to the Future Shop, and descended into a storeroom. Once in the storeroom the thieves used tools to smash through the drywall that sepa- rated Chapters from Future Shop. A Chapters employee was working at the time and did hear the noises made by the sus- pects, but assumed it was some kind of reno- vation taking place in another building. After packing up the laptops the thieves left the way they came. Future Shop was equipped with an alarm, however, it did not go off and police are cur- rently investigating the reason why. Police were not called until 5:30 a.m. when the Chapters employee attempted to enter the storeroom only to find it barricaded. Police arrived on the scene shortly there- after, but the suspects were gone. The Halton Regional Police Service is con- tinuing to investigate this incident and any- one with information relevant to it is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Burglars cut hole in roof to steal Future Shop laptops An Oshawa couple is facing more than two dozen charges each, after items were stolen dur- ing real estate open houses. Durham Regional Police arrested the couple in Oakville on Sunday, Sept. 19 where, police say, they had been going to open houses. Members of the Durham police Criminal Investigation Bureaus in Oshawa and Whitby, along with other units, began investigating an increase in thefts while real estate agents were showing houses for sale, mainly in Oshawa and Whitby. While investigating the incidents, police fol- lowed the suspects to Oakville, where items were stolen during open houses and shoplifted from a store, police say. Peter Mason King, 52, and Nora Ann Thomson, 51, both of Mary Street North in Oshawa, are charged with nine counts of theft under $5,000, three counts of theft over $5,000, possession over $5,000 and 15 counts of unlaw- fully being in a dwelling house. King has also been charged with attempted theft under $5,000 and breach of probation. They were held for bail hearings. Police have recovered a large quantity of jew- elry, money and property totaling approximately $100,000 and are asking members of the public affected by these thefts to contact police and identify their property.
