- Hornby Loyal Orange Lodge members marched at Woodbridge in this July 12, 1912 photograph. They would have gone by train for this big parade and gathering.
To commemorate the victory of Prince William of Orange over King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, Orangemen walked, accompanied by a band, on July 12th every year. These men wear their personal Hornby LOL badges pinned to their chests on the right. These badges could be turned over to show a black side, "In Memoriam", to be worn during funeral or memorial ceremonies. - Notes
- Ontario archival histories show that the Loyal Orange Order came to Ontario with military men and others with Irish Protestant connections. The Lodges were an opportunity for men to socialize although in the early 1800's some, such as the Cavan Township Blazers, could be rough in their idea of righting perceived wrongs. Women, children and neighbours participated in the social events of picnics, dinners, games and other community support work. Women have long been members too.
