Description
This is a transcript of the text on this page 3: Construction of the Home

The house itself is a traditional Georgian style of home. It has an area of approximately 30’ x 40’, with a storage room of 12’ x 15’. It is a timber construction home. Prior to the purchase of the home in 1918, it had undergone heavy neglect thus when purchased it required much work to restore it to its natural beauty. Originally the exterior surface was clapboard which over the years has been changed to cedar stripping and is now asbestos siding. The gable roof was originally wooden shingles and has now been converted to asphalt shingles. In 1918 when Mr. Tovell Senior bought the farm a summer kitchen extended off the back of the house.
The foundation of the original house is still as it was then. It is a stone wall foundation . There is a cellar under approximately two-thirds of the house. The stones for the foundation as well as the wood used in the beams were taken from the surrounding area.
The floor joists are constructed from hardwood logs taken from the area as I have already mentioned. The beams used in the framework of the house were all left outside the wall partitions, thus the present owners are faced with the task of cleverly concealing them when decorating. Wooden pegs and corner braces were likewise used in the house construction to hold the beams together. The wooden beams used are 4” x 4”s.
The original entrance to the home was a narrow long verandah having pillars supporting the hammock style roof. This verandah was removed by the present owners and a more eye appealing one constructed.
